Plot of 'The Best Man'

The Best Man is a 1999 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee in his directorial debut. The film stars an ensemble cast led by Taye Diggs and Nia Long.

The plot of The Best Man centres around Harper Stewart (Diggs), an up-and-coming author from Chicago whose debut novel, Unfinished Business, has been selected by Oprah's Book Club. The novel is based on Harper's own life and that of his close friends, including his best friend Lance Sullivan (Morris Chestnut), a professional athlete for the New York Giants. Just before Lance's wedding, Harper travels to New York City early to spend time with old college friends, including Jordan Armstrong (Long), with whom he has a history. Jordan, now a TV reporter, has obtained an advance copy of Harper's novel and shares it with the group.

The group of friends, which includes Julian "Murch" Murchison (Harold Perrineau) and Quentin Spivey (Terrence Howard), gather for the wedding of Lance to Mia Morgan (Monica Calhoun). Harper is the best man, but he is nervous because he knows his friends will recognise themselves in the novel, which includes a secret fling Harper once had with Mia. Jordan, who is a bridesmaid, also has an advance copy of the book and wants to rekindle her relationship with Harper. As the wedding weekend unfolds, Harper fears that Lance will read his book and discover the truth about Mia's infidelity.

The situation comes to a head when Lance does indeed read the book and learns about Mia's past with Harper. Enraged, he attacks Harper, almost throwing him off a balcony. However, with the help of his girlfriend Robyn (Sanaa Lathan), Harper is able to repair his relationships and ensure the wedding goes ahead. The film ends with Harper and Robyn engaged and the entire wedding party dancing together.
