My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 plot
The 2016 film My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is a romantic comedy directed by Kirk Jones and written by Nia Vardalos, who also stars. The film is a sequel to the 2002 film My Big Fat Greek Wedding and follows the life of Toula Portokalos-Miller, whose life is in a state of disarray. The recession has forced the closure of her travel agency and the family dry cleaning business, leaving only her father Gus's restaurant open. Her husband Ian is the principal at their teenage daughter Paris's high school, and their marriage has become strained due to Toula's obsession with fixing her family's problems and her overinvolvement in Paris's life.
Paris, who is applying to college, feels smothered by her close-knit family and seeks independence and privacy by applying to schools across the country. Meanwhile, Gus has become convinced that he is a direct descendant of Alexander the Great and wants confirmation from an online ancestry site. While sorting through his records, he discovers that his marriage to Maria is invalid due to an unsigned marriage certificate. Although his current priest is unwilling to sign it, he agrees to perform a new ceremony. Gus insists on remarrying Maria after fifty years together, but she wants him to propose properly. When he refuses, Maria refuses to go through with the ceremony.
Eventually, Gus ends up in the hospital, and Maria agrees to marry him after he publicly pleads with her. Maria wants the wedding she never had, so a wedding planner is hired, but the family's outlandish choices cause the planner to quit. The whole family pitches in to make the wedding happen. Paris has been accepted to Northwestern University in Chicago and NYU in New York City. She chooses Northwestern to please her mother, but her great-grandmother convinces her to follow her heart and go to New York. Paris asks her crush, Bennett, to the prom, and it turns out he is also Greek and has a crazy family. The prom falls on the same night as the wedding, so Paris agrees to attend the reception after the prom.
On the way to the church, Gus, his brother Panos, and Taki get drunk on ouzo. Maria is upset by Gus's behaviour and storms off, but Panos convinces her to go through with the ceremony. Ian and Toula privately renew their vows as they watch Gus and Maria remarry. At the prom, Paris and Bennett share their first kiss. At the wedding reception, Gus receives a letter confirming his ancestry, but Ian realises that Toula forged it to make her father happy. The film ends with the family dropping Paris off at her college dorm in New York.

Many viewers enjoyed the film, calling it a "good sequel" and a "nice follow-up film to the original". One IMDb review states:
> "It's the best sequel you could've made twelve years later, and if that's good enough for you, it's good enough for a rainy day at the movies."
The film's nostalgic and familiar feel was praised by some critics, with one IMDb reviewer saying:
> "Nia Vardalos obviously wrote this script as a love letter to the fans of the original. It fits like a warm blanket – comfortable and familiar."
The performances of the cast were also well-received, particularly Andrea Martin as Aunt Voula. One IMDb review reads:
> "The one figure we can rely on to shake things up through the sheer awesomeness of her bizarre presence is Second City veteran Andrea Martin as Toula's thoroughly inappropriate Aunt Voula."
However, some viewers criticised the film for its lack of originality, with one Rotten Tomatoes review stating:
> "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 isn't a bad sequel, it's just a pointless one."
Another review on Rotten Tomatoes mentions:
> "There's not an ounce of cynicism here, and I think audiences might respond to the sweet open-heartedness of Vardalos and company, but there isn't a lot of originality here either."
Some viewers also found the plot to be contrived and overly reliant on stereotypes, with one IMDb review commenting:
> "The premise to make another wedding is artificial at best. The daughter story should be the centre this time but Nia insists on making her character the lead. She simply doesn't have the romantic drama."
