Frey's Fall: Post-Red Wedding

what happens to house frey after the red wedding

The Red Wedding was a pivotal moment in the War of the Five Kings, orchestrated by Lord Walder Frey as revenge against Robb Stark for breaking a marriage pact between House Stark and House Frey. The massacre resulted in the deaths of Robb Stark, his pregnant wife Talisa, Robb's mother Catelyn, and most of his soldiers.

The Red Wedding elevated House Frey's status as they were granted the castle of Riverrun and promised protection from the Lannisters. However, the massacre also ruined House Frey's reputation, and they were treated with disgust and antipathy by many in Westeros, including their own allies.

The survivors of the Red Wedding included Edmure Tully, who was taken captive, Brynden Blackfish Tully, who escaped, and Arya Stark, who later avenged her family by poisoning all the surviving male members of House Frey.

Robb Stark's demise

By Game of Thrones season 3, Robb has spent over one and a half seasons below the Neck. The Kings in the War of the Five Kings have died, been beaten, or like Robb have experienced a number of setbacks. His mother releases Jaime much to his bannermen’s dismay, he executes the head of House Karstark for insubordination, and he dishonors the Freys by breaking his marriage pact and eloping with Talisa Maegyr. Seeing the war effort lost, the Freys and Robb’s bannermen, the Boltons, throw a wedding party for Edmure Tully, and it’s there they exact their coup, with the grisly murders giving it the name the Red Wedding.

The Red Wedding resulted in the shocking deaths of Robb Stark, his pregnant wife Talisa, and many Northern and Riverlander soldiers, fracturing the Stark family and allowing the Lannisters to win the war. Robb's demise was not only a loss for the Starks but also for the entire North, as they lost thousands of men during the war and were left without a King.

Talisa Stark's murder

Talisa Stark, formerly Talisa Maegyr, was the wife of Robb Stark, the King in the North. She was born in the Free City of Volantis, the oldest and largest of the Free Cities. She was a healer on the battlefields of the Westerlands, where she met Robb Stark, fell in love with him, and eventually married him.

Talisa was killed at the Red Wedding, a massacre that took place during the War of the Five Kings. The Red Wedding was orchestrated by Lord Walder Frey as revenge against Robb Stark for breaking a marriage pact between House Stark and House Frey. Robb had initially promised to marry one of Lord Frey's daughters but later married Talisa instead.

At the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey, Talisa was stabbed repeatedly in the abdomen by Lame Lothar Frey, son of Lord Walder Frey, causing her to quickly succumb to her wounds. Her unborn child with Robb also died. Robb, wounded with several crossbow bolts, crawled towards Talisa and embraced her, devastated over the loss of his beloved wife and unborn child.

The death of Talisa and their child sent Robb into a state of shock. Moments later, Robb was killed by Roose Bolton, who drove a dagger through his heart.

Talisa was eventually avenged by her sister-in-law, Arya, who murdered Lame Lothar Frey, as well as Black Walder Rivers and Lord Walder Frey, for their roles in the Red Wedding.

Catelyn Stark's death

Catelyn, Robb, and most of his loyal soldiers were slaughtered at the wedding feast of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey at the Twins. Catelyn, seated between Ser Ryman Frey and Lord Roose Bolton during the feast, noticed that Bolton was wearing chainmail under his clothing. She realised that they had been led into a trap and slapped Bolton across the face.

After Lothar Frey stabbed Robb's pregnant wife, Talisa, multiple times in the abdomen, Catelyn seized Walder Frey's lackwit grandson, Jinglebell, and offered to trade his life for Robb's. When Robb was killed by Bolton, Catelyn, maddened with grief, sawed Jinglebell's throat with a knife. Walder Frey, indifferent to his grandson's death, responded by slitting Catelyn's throat.

Catelyn's corpse was dumped naked into the Green Fork in mockery of House Tully's funeral customs. Three days later, her corpse was retrieved from the river by her direwolf, Nymeria. Catelyn was resurrected by Lord Beric Dondarrion, who gave his own life to revive her. Consumed with the desire for vengeance, she assumed command of the brotherhood without banners and mercilessly executed those she considered to be Lannister collaborators.

Edmure Tully's captivity

Edmure Tully, the Lord of Riverrun and Lord Paramount of the Trident, is the son and heir of the late Lord Hoster Tully of Riverrun. Edmure is the younger brother of Catelyn and Lysa. Edmure's captivity begins when he is taken prisoner by his new father-in-law, Walder Frey, following the Red Wedding. Edmure's captivity is used as leverage against his uncle, Brynden Tully, who has retaken Riverrun with the remaining Tully forces. Edmure is brought to the siege of Riverrun, where he is threatened with execution if Brynden does not surrender. Edmure stands with a noose around his neck, but Brynden refuses to yield.

The siege continues until Jaime Lannister arrives and takes command from Ser Ryman Frey. Jaime offers Edmure a chance to live out his days in gentle imprisonment as a hostage at Casterly Rock with his wife, Roslin, and their newborn son. Jaime threatens to catapult the baby into Riverrun if Edmure does not agree to his terms. Edmure reluctantly agrees and commands the Tully garrison to surrender. Edmure is then returned to captivity with the Freys, while Brynden escapes. Edmure is eventually freed and restored to his titles and lands following the deaths of most of House Frey and the defeat of Cersei Lannister at King's Landing.
