Stark Vengeance: Post-Red Wedding

what happens after red wedding

The Red Wedding was a pivotal moment in the War of the Five Kings, resulting in the deaths of Robb Stark, his pregnant wife Talisa, and many Northern and Riverlander soldiers. The massacre ended the conflict between House Stark and House Lannister, allowing the Lannisters to win the war. It also led to the annihilation of the Northern army and the capture of Lord Edmure Tully, with Ser Brynden Tully escaping.

The Red Wedding was orchestrated by Lord Walder Frey as revenge against Robb Stark for breaking a marriage pact between House Stark and House Frey. Lord Tywin Lannister, Lord Roose Bolton, and Lame Lothar Frey were also involved in the planning of the massacre.

Following the Red Wedding, House Frey was elevated as the new Great House of the Riverlands, and House Bolton became the new Great House of the North. The Northern resistance fell, and the Lannisters, Boltons, and Freys lost all respect due to the violation of the sacred laws of hospitality.

The survivors of the Red Wedding included Edmure Tully, who became a captive of House Frey, Brynden Blackfish Tully, who escaped, and Arya Stark, who later avenged her family by poisoning all surviving male members of House Frey.

The Lannisters win the War of the Five Kings

The Red Wedding was a pivotal moment in the War of the Five Kings, a major civil war in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. The Lannisters, led by Tywin Lannister, orchestrated the massacre with the Houses of Frey and Bolton, securing a decisive victory over their enemies, the Starks.

The Red Wedding was a brutal betrayal of Robb Stark, the King in the North, by his bannermen, the Boltons and the Freys. Robb had broken a marriage pact with House Frey, and as compensation, he offered that Edmure Tully, his uncle, would wed one of Lord Walder Frey's daughters. The wedding was held at the Twins, the castle of House Frey. Robb and his mother, Catelyn, were lulled into a false sense of security by Lord Frey, who vowed to assure his guests' safety, in accordance with the sacred guest right.

During the wedding, Catelyn noticed that Roose Bolton, one of Robb's bannermen, was wearing chainmail under his clothes. Before she could warn Robb, the signal for the massacre was given, and the Freys and Boltons turned on the Starks and their Northern soldiers. Robb's wife, Talisa, was stabbed to death, and Robb was wounded by several crossbow bolts. Catelyn was also shot with crossbow bolts and, in a desperate attempt to save her son, she slit the throat of Walder Frey's wife, before having her own throat cut. Robb, in a daze, called out to his mother, and Roose Bolton stepped forward, declaring "the Lannisters send their regards" as he stabbed Robb through the heart.

The Northern army was annihilated, and the few survivors were captured as political hostages. The Red Wedding effectively ended the conflict between House Stark and House Lannister, and the Lannisters were finally able to win the War of the Five Kings. The Lannisters' victory, however, was short-lived, and they soon found themselves facing new enemies and localized hostilities throughout the Seven Kingdoms.

Edmure Tully is taken captive

Edmure Tully, the Lord of Riverrun and Lord Paramount of the Trident, is taken captive by his new father-in-law, Walder Frey, after the Red Wedding. Edmure is the only living son of Hoster Tully, the previous Lord Paramount of the Trident, and his wife, Minisa Whent. Edmure is the younger brother of Catelyn and Lysa Stark.

Edmure is first introduced in season 3 of the TV series, but he appears in the first novel of the book series. He is described as a well-meaning but impetuous man, who is a fairly competent military leader. Edmure is a knight and heir to House Tully, and he rules over Riverrun as the de facto lord while his father is ill.

Edmure's capture by the Freys occurs after he marries Roslin Frey at the Red Wedding. Edmure is nervous about the wedding, unsure of which of Walder Frey's daughters he will be forced to marry as compensation for Robb Stark's broken marriage pact with House Frey. However, he is relieved when Roslin is revealed to be beautiful, and he enjoys himself immensely at the wedding feast. Edmure is led away to consummate the marriage, and it is only after his departure that the Red Wedding massacre begins.

Edmure is taken prisoner and held hostage by the Freys, who plan to use him as leverage to negotiate the surrender of Riverrun. Edmure remains a captive of House Frey for several years, and during this time, his wife, Roslin, gives birth to their son. Eventually, Edmure is freed and attends the committee to choose the next king of Westeros.

Brynden Blackfish Tully escapes

Ser Brynden Tully, also known as the Blackfish, was one of the few to escape the Red Wedding.

Brynden was present for the wedding but left the keep to relieve himself outside before the massacre in the main hall began. He fought his way out of the assault on the camps and slipped away from the Twins during the confusion of the night-time ambush.

Roose Bolton ruefully noted to Lord Walder Frey the following day that Brynden had escaped. Walder was dismissive, saying he wouldn't get far, but Bolton was clearly concerned that Brynden would reach the safety of Riverrun before he could be found.

Brynden did indeed make it back to Riverrun, where he reunited the remnants of the Tully army and successfully took back the castle from House Frey.

Lord Walder Frey berated his sons for losing Riverrun and requested help from the Lannisters in taking it back, thus beginning the second siege of Riverrun.

During the siege, Brynden parleyed with Jaime Lannister, informing him that Riverrun could hold out for two years and that he would need to be ready to lose thousands of men if he wanted to storm the castle. Realising that Brynden had no intention of surrendering, Jaime was furious that he had to meet him at all.

After receiving a letter from Sansa Stark, asking him to send his forces North to join her and Jon's army, Brynden refused to give up Riverrun, even for his great-niece. Edmure Tully was sent to retake the castle, under the threat of his son being murdered. Knowing that Edmure was not coming of his own free will, Brynden ordered his men not to let him in.

As his men allowed Edmure into Riverrun, a disheartened Brynden left the battlements. Edmure ordered his men to surrender and that his uncle be put in chains, but Brynden refused and resolved to kill as many men as he could. He led Brienne of Tarth and her squire Podrick Payne into a waterway to escape Riverrun by boat. He stayed to die fighting for his home, though he admitted he'd "probably make a fool" of himself due to a lack of recent combat experience.

A Lannister soldier later reported to Jaime that Brynden had been killed while resisting arrest. Though Jaime appeared saddened to have helped the Freys murder another member of Catelyn's family, it is unknown if he gave Brynden a proper funeral or allowed the Freys to desecrate his corpse as they did to Catelyn and Robb at the Red Wedding.

Arya Stark survives and later avenges her family

After the Red Wedding, Arya escapes with Sandor "The Hound" Clegane. She later parts ways with him and travels to Braavos, where she trains to become a Faceless Man. Upon her return to Westeros, she exacts retribution for the Red Wedding by exterminating the male line of House Frey.

Arya disguises herself as a serving girl and infiltrates the Twins, where she kills Walder Frey's sons, Lame Lothar Frey and Black Walder Rivers, who were responsible for the deaths of her sister-in-law, Talisa Stark, and her mother, Catelyn Stark, respectively. She then bakes their flesh into a pie, which she serves to Walder Frey as the two dine alone. After revealing her true identity, she slits his throat and watches him die.

Catelyn Stark's body is thrown into a river

Catelyn Stark's body is thrown into the Green Fork river, naked and stripped of all dignity. This is a cruel mockery of the Tully funeral customs, which involve cremating a body on a burning boat set adrift in the Trident River.

Catelyn's corpse is discovered three days later by a wolf pack led by Arya Stark's direwolf, Nymeria. Arya, skinchanging into Nymeria during her sleep, recognises her mother's body and controls Nymeria to pull it out of the river. She then guards it against other wolves until the outlaw band Brotherhood Without Banners passes by to repel the wolves.

Catelyn is then resurrected by Lord Beric Dondarrion, who sacrifices his life force to revive her. Her time spent deceased has caused Catelyn's body to decay, and she loses most of her previous kind personality, except for her hatred of the Lannisters and the Freys. Catelyn then assumes command of the Brotherhood and changes their aim to terrorising anyone related to House Frey and Lannister.
