Infinity blouses

When making an infinity blouse, it's important to choose the right fabric. A thin jersey fabric with a small amount of elastane (around 5%) is ideal, as it will flatteringly hug the body without being too transparent. The fabric should also have a nice fall to ensure the blouse drapes elegantly. To achieve a more fluid skirt that doesn't stick to the legs, you can create a half-long petticoat from fine lining material.

The pattern for an infinity blouse typically features a semi-circle skirt, with the pattern piece used for both the front and back. The side seam is straight, while the centre front and back are diagonal. Depending on the desired length, fabric width, weave, and pattern, the skirt can be designed with just one seam.

To construct the pattern, start by drawing a long vertical line. Then, calculate the waist girth by adding 1/2 of the waist girth to 1 – 2 1/3 of the waist girth, and subtracting 1.5 cm. For a smoother waist ring, subtract 1 cm from 1/3 of the waist girth. Decide on your desired skirt length and draw an angle line from point 1. Create circular arcs from points 2 and 3. Points 4 and 5 should be at an angle. Check the width of the waist ring by halving the waist girth and adding a 1/4 waist girth keep distance. Draw the centre front and back lines from point 1 to 6, ensuring that the lengths from points 2 to 3 and 4 to 5 are equal.

For the waistband, create a rectangle using the measurements of the waist girth and the desired waistband width. The top edge of the waistband should align with the break. Alternatively, you can construct the waistband using the hip measurement and add elastic so that no zipper is needed, allowing the blouse to be stepped into from below.

The beam width should be generous enough to cover the bust, with a length of 3 metres recommended for the various binding options. Once you've cut out the pattern pieces, close the side seams of the skirt, keeping the waist width with a large stitch. Attach the straps to the skirt with safety pins to test out different binding styles before sewing them in place. The straps should slightly overlap in the front centre and extend beyond the side seams at the back. You can also add cups to the straps for more support. Due to the diagonal thread line, infinity blouses should always be hung for storage.

• Unfold the front layer and place a length of rope along the neckline.
• Roll the neckline fabric around the rope twice and secure it with pins.
• Hand-stitch the loop closed and knot the ends of the rope.

Using a Spaghetti Strap Tank Top

• Detach the straps from the back of the tank top using a seam ripper or scissors.
• Remove the hardware from the straps and finish the ends to prevent fraying by tacking them down or tying knots.
• Tie the straps behind your neck.

Using a Silk Handkerchief

• Iron a silk scarf and fold it diagonally to form a triangle.
• Measure and mark a line 20 cm down from the top of the triangle.
• Draw a horizontal line along this mark and secure the fabric with pins.
• Stitch along the chalk line and flip the handkerchief right side out.
• Measure and mark another line 2.5 cm down from the seam and stitch along this line to form a channel.
• Thread a ribbon or cord through the channel and tie it around your neck.

Using a Skirt

• Choose a flowy or A-line skirt that fits over your rib cage and has side seams.
• Step into the skirt and pull it up to your chest, turning it so that one side seam runs down the centre of your chest.
• Cut two lengths of ribbon and pin them to the inside of the skirt, just right and left of the centre seam.
• Attach the ribbons with top stitches and tie them behind your neck.

Using a Scarf

• Choose a large scarf that expresses your personal style.
• Lay the scarf horizontally across your back and wrap the top corners around each other.
• Pull the corners over your shoulders and tie them behind your neck.
