In 1959, Eugene Pitt formed his own group, The Jive Five, with friends from his neighbourhood in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant. Pitt, along with Jerome Hanna, sang tenor, accompanied by Richard Harris, Thurmon "Billy" Prophet, and bass vocalist Norman Johnson. In early 1961, the group auditioned for Les Cahan and Joe Rene at the Beltone Studio on Broadway in New York. Cahan had been operating the studio for several years and had recently expanded into the record label business with Beltone Records.
Beltone Records' first big hit was Bobby Lewis's "Tossin' and Turnin'", which became the biggest song of 1961. The Jive Five's first single with Beltone was "My True Story"/"When I Was Single" in 1961.
