Bridesmaids' plot
Bridesmaids is an American romantic comedy film released in 2011. The plot centres on Annie, a single woman in her mid-to-late 30s, whose life is falling apart. After her bakery goes out of business, she loses her savings and her boyfriend, and has to take a job in a jewellery store. She shares an apartment with obnoxious British immigrant siblings Gil and Brynn and has an unfulfilling casual sexual relationship with a wealthy and self-absorbed man named Ted. The only positive presence in her life is her lifelong best friend, Lillian, who gets engaged and asks Annie to be her maid of honour.
At the engagement party, Annie meets the other bridesmaids: Lillian's cynical cousin Rita, her naive newlywed coworker Becca, Doug's foul-mouthed but friendly sister Megan, and Helen, the wealthy, snobby wife of Doug's boss. Annie and Helen are instantly jealous of each other's friendship with Lillian and become increasingly competitive, trying to outdo each other with their ideas for the bridal shower and wedding. Annie's suggestions are repeatedly dismissed in favour of Helen's, and she becomes increasingly out of control.
Annie also meets Nathan Rhodes, a friendly traffic cop who encourages her to open a new bakery. After a romantic night together, she panics and abruptly leaves when Nathan surprises her with baking supplies. Annie is fired from her job after a profanity-laden argument with a teenage customer, and is then evicted by her roommates, forcing her to move in with her mother.
She travels to Chicago for the bridal shower at Helen's house, which has been transformed into a Parisian-themed event. Helen upstages Annie's heartfelt, handmade gift by giving Lillian a trip to Paris, and Annie flies into a rage, berating Helen and Lillian and destroying the decor. She is kicked out of the shower and disinvited from the wedding.
On her way home, Annie is involved in a car accident, and Nathan is the attending officer. He admonishes her for not taking responsibility for herself, but when Ted arrives to give her a ride and asks her to perform oral sex on him, she breaks off the relationship and walks home.
After a pep talk from Megan, Annie tries to make amends with Nathan, but he ignores her. On the day of the wedding, Helen appears at Annie's apartment, begging for help finding Lillian, who has gone missing. Helen apologises to Annie, tearfully revealing that she doesn't have any true friends. With some begrudging help from Nathan, they find Lillian hiding out in her own apartment, overwhelmed by Helen's extravagant wedding planning and afraid of leaving her life in Milwaukee. Annie reconciles with Lillian and resumes her role as maid of honour. After the wedding, Annie and Helen share a hug, and Nathan arrives to pick Annie up.
