Legal requirements for foreigners
If you are a foreigner looking to marry a Cambodian citizen, you must be present in Cambodia to complete the formalities and procedures of the marriage. This process can only be done in person and can take anywhere from one to three months, with several meetings and a lot of documentation.
Firstly, you must obtain approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Interior before the wedding party. This involves submitting the following documents to the Legal and Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFA) of the Kingdom of Cambodia:
- A document certifying that the applicant is single, issued by the competent authorities of the foreigner's country.
- A medical certificate issued by a competent authority in Cambodia.
- A criminal record issued by the competent authority of the foreigner's country.
- A document highlighting the applicant's profession(s), issued by the competent authorities of the foreigner's country, to certify that the applicant is capable of providing for the family.
- A copy of the passport, which must be legalized by the foreigner's embassy or consulate in Cambodia.
After receiving approval from the MFA, you must then obtain approval from the Ministry of Interior (MoI). This process can take another one to six months. Once you have the MoI approval letter, you must show it to the village chief (where the Cambodian citizen is registered in a family book) and they will issue a wedding certificate. The process costs no less than $500.
It is important to note that since 2018, the Cambodian government has required male U.S. citizens wishing to marry Cambodians to establish a monthly income of at least US $2,500. The U.S. Embassy will provide a certified cover letter to be attached to these documents when certifying U.S. passport copies and affidavits of single status.
Once the certificate is issued, you are legally married and can hold a wedding party. If you do not complete this legal process, authorities may shut down your wedding party.
