What You'll Learn

The ranch's history
Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch is located in the Cooweescoowee district of Cherokee Nation, between Claremore and Oologah, Oklahoma. The ranch, which was owned by Rogers's father, was nearly 60,000 acres at its height. Will Rogers was born and raised on the ranch, where he developed a love for cowboying and learned the art of roping from Cherokee freedman Dan Walker.
Rogers's boyhood home, built in 1875, is a log-walled, two-story house designed in the Greek Revival style of architecture. It was nicknamed “The White House on the Verdigris” and is a rare surviving example of buildings on the former Indian Territory frontier. The ranch also features a historically accurate barn with a climate-controlled classroom and a historical video program.
In addition to his work on the ranch, Rogers attended Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, Missouri, for two years. He left school in 1889 and became a cowboy in the Texas Panhandle. He later travelled to Argentina and South Africa, where he performed with Texas Jack’s Wild West Circus. Rogers became known for his roping skills, achieving a Guinness World Record for throwing three lassos at once.
Rogers's fame as a roper led to a career in vaudeville theatre, where he performed a trick roping act. He rose to worldwide fame as a columnist, philosopher, radio personality, and movie star, becoming the highest-paid actor in Hollywood in the early 1930s. During this time, he bought a plot of land in Santa Monica, California, where he built a ranch for himself and his family. This ranch, now known as Will Rogers State Historic Park, is also open to the public.

Will Rogers' life and career
William Penn Adair Rogers, more commonly known as Will Rogers, was born on November 4, 1879, in Indian Territory, which later became Oklahoma. He was a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and is known as "Oklahoma's Favorite Son". Rogers was raised on a ranch, where he learned how to ride a horse and do rope tricks. He worked at several ranches in the American West and learned how to use a lasso from a freed slave.
Rogers began his career as a performer on vaudeville and in Wild West shows. He created his own vaudeville act, which he toured across the United States and Europe. In 1908, he married Betty Blake, with whom he had four children. The family moved around following Will’s career, living in New York and later Hollywood. Rogers appeared in his first Broadway show, The Wall Street Girl, in 1912, demonstrating his roping skills between acts. He poked fun at prominent audience members and commented on political news, becoming a master of the political one-liner. By 1916, he was a featured star in Ziegfeld's Follies on Broadway, moving into satire by transforming the "Ropin' Fool" to the "Talkin' Fool".
Rogers gained recognition as a humorist-philosopher in vaudeville and gained a national audience in acting and literary careers from 1915 to 1935. He wrote more than 4,000 nationally syndicated newspaper columns, expressing his traditional morality and belief that political problems were not as serious as they sounded. He also wrote six books and became a prominent radio broadcaster and political commentator. In 1929, he signed a movie contract with the Fox Film Corporation and made his first talking picture, They Had to See Paris. He went on to make 50 silent films and 21 "talkies", becoming the highest-paid Hollywood film star by the mid-1930s.
Rogers was also known for his humanitarian work, travelling to Nicaragua to benefit earthquake and fire victims, and to London to observe a disarmament conference. He died in 1935, in a plane crash near Point Barrow, Alaska, along with aviator Wiley Post.
