What You'll Learn

The Royal Yacht Britannia
In 1994, the Conservative government announced the yacht's retirement. In 1997, after over 40 years of service, the vessel was decommissioned and is now berthed at Leith Port in Edinburgh, where curious visitors can explore the majestic Britannia. The yacht is now an award-winning tourist attraction, just two miles from Edinburgh's city centre at Ocean Terminal. The yacht played host to some of the world’s most famous people, from Nelson Mandela to Winston Churchill, but above all, it was home to the British Royal Family for over 40 years.
The visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia begins in the Visitor Centre on the second floor of the Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre. In this centre, visitors can discover the vessel’s past through numerous photographs. Visitors will be given an English audio guide with all the details of the vessel. Beginning with a visit to Britannia’s Bridge, visitors will also explore the State Apartments, the Crew’s Quarters, and finish at the Engine Room. The Queen’s chambers are very plainly decorated, but other parts of the vessel are extremely lavish, like the Rolls Royce that sits permanently in the vessel’s garage.
The Royal Deck Tearoom offers a selection of home-baked cakes, plus scones, sandwiches, soups and drinks. Visitors can also stay at Fingal Hotel, Tripadvisor's No.1 UK Luxury Floating Hotel, Britannia's sister ship.

Mountain climbing
Choosing a Suitable Mountain
The first step is to select a mountain that aligns with your skill level and interests. Consider factors such as the mountain's height, steepness, and the technical difficulty of the climbing routes. Research the mountain's location, weather conditions, and the availability of necessary equipment and guides.
Planning Your Climb
Once you have chosen your mountain, it's time to plan your climb. Determine the best time of year to attempt the ascent, taking into account factors like weather patterns and the number of climbers during different seasons. Develop a comprehensive packing list, ensuring you have all the necessary gear, including climbing equipment, clothing suitable for the climate, and emergency supplies.
Gaining the Necessary Skills
Understanding the Environment
Respecting the natural environment is crucial when climbing mountains. Learn about the local flora and fauna, and be mindful of any environmentally sensitive areas. Some mountains may have specific regulations in place to protect wildlife, such as restricted climbing areas during nesting seasons for certain bird species. Adhere to leave-no-trace principles to minimize your impact on the environment.
Rock Climbing Routes
For those interested in rock climbing routes, there are several options available:
- "The Honeymoon is Over" in RMNP is known for its technical difficulty and impressive alpine free climbing ascents.
- "Honeymoon Chimney" in Castle Valley offers a unique climbing experience, starting with a climb to a large ledge and then traversing upwards towards The Rectory.

- There are also climbing spots in Eagle/Vail/Minturn/Red Cliff, where access may vary depending on the presence of nesting peregrine falcons.
Remember to always prioritize your safety, follow established climbing regulations, and respect the natural environment as you embark on your mountain climbing journey.
