Mayan ruins in Tulum
The Mayan Ruins in Tulum are perched on seaside cliffs overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea in Mexico. Tulum is unique as it is one of the few ancient Mayan cities built on the coast, and one of the few that was protected by a wall. The wall, which is between 3m and 5m high and surrounds the entire archaeological site, is thought to have been built to protect the Mayan population inside from invaders, or to house only priests and nobility, while peasants lived outside. The city was built in the 13th century, between 1200 and 1500 CE, during the Mayan post-classic period, and was inhabited as early as 564. By the time Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1518, Tulum was a bustling capital and a vital trading hub, with a population of around 500 within its fortified walls and 10,000 in the surrounding areas. Tulum was a seaport, trading mainly in turquoise and jade, and controlling maritime commerce along the Caribbean coast to Belize.
The ruins themselves are modest in size, but the site is incredibly well-preserved and boasts an inviting beach. The most prominent structure is El Castillo, a 12-metre limestone cliff overlooking the sea, with a pathway north that leads down to the beach. Other structures include the Temple of the Frescoes and the Temple of the Descending God, which features a figure with bird's wings and a tail, believed to represent a Mayan deity. The site can be explored on foot, and there is wheelchair access. The Tulum Ruins also allow access to the beaches that form part of the protected Tulum National Park, so visitors can go for a swim in the crystalline waters after exploring the ruins.
Tulum is located on the Yucatán Peninsula, 130km south of Cancun, and can be reached by flying into the new Tulum airport or the Cancun airport, which is a 1.5-hour drive away. It is also easily accessible by road, located along the main highway and 10 minutes from town.
