Kleinfeld was originally a fur store called I. Kleinfeld and Son, owned by Isadore Kleinfeld, who had trained as an engineer in Vienna. The store opened in 1941 at 8202 Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Over time, the store expanded to sell high-priced clothes, suits, and coats, and eventually, wedding dresses. By 1968, Kleinfeld exclusively sold wedding dresses and accessories. The store was remodelled in 1987 and then relocated to its current address in Manhattan in 2005.
