History of Honeymoon Island State Park
Honeymoon Island State Park is a Florida State Park located on Honeymoon Island, a barrier island across St. Joseph Sound from Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Ozona, and Crystal Beach. The park is 385 acres (1.6 km2) in land area with 2,400 acres (10 km2) submerged and 4 miles (6 km) of beach. It is the most-visited state park in Florida, receiving over one million visitors each year.
The island was originally inhabited by members of the Tocobaga tribe, the native population of the Tampa Bay area, until the arrival of Spanish explorers in the mid-1500s. Before the Hurricane of 1921, Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island were a single spit of sand known as Hog Island. The hurricane split the island in half, creating Hurricane Pass. In the late 1930s, a businessman named Clinton Washburn purchased the island. While having lunch with a friend who was the editor of Life magazine, he mentioned that the island would be an ideal location for a honeymoon. The Life editor ran the story, and soon, fifty honeymoon cottages were constructed. On May 8, 1940, the first honeymooners arrived, and a total of 164 couples took part in Washburn's venture. However, the business did not last long after the United States entered World War II, and the cottages eventually fell into disrepair.
In the 1960s, a developer planned to build a large residential area on the island by expanding it to 3,000 acres. A causeway leading to the island was constructed in 1964, but this project was ultimately scrapped in 1969 when the developer's permit expired and the state prevented them from renewing it, thanks to the efforts of local environmentalists. The state of Florida then began purchasing the land, acquiring most of the island by 1974 and the rest soon after. Finally, on December 7, 1981, Honeymoon Island State Park was established.
