Plot summary
The 1992 romantic comedy film Honeymoon in Vegas follows Jack Singer, a private eye who swore to his mother on her deathbed that he would never marry. However, his girlfriend Betsy wants to get married and start a family. To resolve this, Jack proposes a quick Las Vegas marriage. They check into the Bally's Casino Resort, where Betsy catches the attention of Tommy Korman, a wealthy gambler. Betsy bears an uncanny resemblance to Tommy's late wife, Donna, who died of skin cancer. Determined to make Betsy his own, Tommy arranges a crooked poker game that prompts Jack to borrow $65,000 after losing to Tommy's higher straight flush. Tommy then offers to erase Jack's debt in exchange for a weekend with Betsy, to which the desperate couple agrees.
Jack later discovers that Tommy has taken Betsy to his vacation home in Kauai, Hawaii. Tommy asks his taxi driver friend, Mahi Mahi, to keep Jack at bay. However, Jack discovers the plan and steals the taxi. He tracks Betsy down outside the Kauai Club but is attacked by Tommy and arrested. After being bailed out of jail by his dentist friend, Sally Molars, Jack learns that Tommy and Betsy have left for Las Vegas, with Tommy convincing Betsy to marry him. Jack frantically searches for a flight to Las Vegas and ends up joining a group of skydiving Elvis impersonators headed to the city.
Meanwhile, Betsy, now sober, reconsiders her decision to marry Tommy. She ultimately rejects him after learning the true amount of Jack's debt. Jack parachutes into Betsy's arms, and they finally get married. The film ends on a heartwarming note, celebrating the resilient and fateful nature of true love, even in the face of external pressures and temptations.
The film Honeymoon in Vegas premiered in 1992 and later inspired a musical adaptation, which premiered on Broadway in January 2015. The musical, also written by Andrew Bergman, features music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 65% based on 37 critics' reviews, with an average rating of 6.1/10. The website's consensus describes the film as a light screwball comedy that has just about what you expect (and nothing you don't). Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, gave the film a score of 63 out of 100 based on 25 critic reviews, indicating "generally favourable" reviews.
Many critics praised the performances of the lead actors, James Caan, Nicolas Cage, and Sarah Jessica Parker. One critic noted that Caan was perfect as the love-stricken gangster, while another highlighted the chemistry between the lead actors, stating that the "unique combination" of the three leads "works". Cage's ability to portray anxiety sympathetically was also commended. The film's premise, humour, and high-concept plot were also well-received, with one critic calling it a well-written, well-acted, original movie with some truly hilarious moments. The film's soundtrack, which featured covers of Elvis Presley songs, was also a highlight for many reviewers.
However, some critics found the film underwhelming. One reviewer felt that the film's premise was "not the most edgy or original" and that the ending was rushed, with Caan's character changing in a way that seemed forced. Another critic, writing for The Guardian, found the production values of the musical adaptation to be lacking, commenting that there was "something a little low-rent about Honeymoon, which stints on sets, on dance numbers and (until the finale) even on sequins". Similarly, a review in The Hollywood Reporter characterised the musical as "silly and then tiresome", concluding that it ultimately "feels slight".
