Walder Frey's Post-Red Wedding Fate

what happens to walder frey after the red wedding

Walder Frey was the Lord of the Crossing, Lord of Riverrun, Lord Paramount of the Trident, and the head of House Frey, a vassal family of House Tully of the Riverlands. He was a cautious man who had lived a long time by making sure he was always on the winning side.

After Robb Stark broke his vow to marry one of Frey's daughters, Frey colluded with Tywin Lannister and Roose Bolton to betray the Starks and Tullys in what became known as the Red Wedding. Frey's men ambushed Robb and his host, slaughtering Robb, Catelyn Stark, many of their bannermen, and a significant portion of the Northern army.

Frey was granted Riverrun and protection from vengeful Northerners by Tywin Lannister. However, his dominion over the Riverlands was weakened when Brynden Tully retook Riverrun from the Freys.

Frey was still alive by the end of the books, but in the TV adaptation, he was killed by Arya Stark, who avenged the Red Wedding.

Walder Frey's sons Lothar and Black Walder are sent to Riverrun to discuss a new alliance with Edmure Tully

Walder Frey's sons Lothar and Black Walder are sent to Riverrun by their father to discuss a new alliance with Edmure Tully. They are to negotiate the terms for the Freys' re-entry into the Northern army. Walder Frey's demands include an apology from Robb Stark, the castle of Harrenhal and all its lands and incomes, and for Edmure Tully to marry one of his daughters, Roslin. Edmure is reluctant to marry a woman he has never met, but eventually agrees to the arrangement.

Lothar and Black Walder are present at the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey. During the wedding, Lothar hires a group of assassins disguised as musicians. After the bedding ceremony, Lothar stabs Robb Stark's pregnant wife, Talisa, in the stomach, killing her and her unborn child. Robb is enraged and prepares to attack, but is killed by arrows fired by the assassins. Lothar presumably continues to participate in the ensuing massacre.

After the Red Wedding, Lothar and Black Walder inform their father that Brynden Tully has retaken Riverrun. Walder Frey admonishes his sons for letting the Blackfish slip through their fingers and orders them to retake Riverrun using Edmure as a bargaining piece. They lay siege to Riverrun but prove to be incompetent commanders. Jaime Lannister arrives to take over the siege and chastises the Freys for their incompetence.

Lothar and Black Walder are later killed by Arya Stark, who minces their flesh and bakes them into a pie, which she serves to their father.

Robb Stark and his entourage arrive at the Twins, where they are offered hospitality by Walder Frey

Walder Frey's men then arrive, and Robb intends to return to the North with his new wife, Jeyne, in tow. Robb had pledged to wed one of Walder Frey's daughters, and this perceived slight is not likely to be overlooked. Robb's uncle, Edmure, is to wed Roslin Frey, and once the wedding is done, Robb intends to return to the North to reclaim his territory from the Ironborn and avenge the deaths of his brothers, Bran and Rickon.

Robb's arrival at the Twins is the culmination of a series of events that began with his father's execution. Robb was declared King in the North, and won many battles against House Lannister. However, he made a series of unwise decisions, including executing Rickard Karstark for treason and murder, which cost him the Karstark contingent of his army. Robb's decision to send Theon Greyjoy to the Iron Islands also proved disastrous, as Theon betrayed Robb and captured Winterfell.

Robb's arrival at the Twins sets the stage for the Red Wedding, where he and his mother are betrayed and murdered by Walder Frey and his men. Despite guest right, Walder Frey orders his men to kill Robb and his companions during the feast after Edmure's wedding. Robb is stabbed in the heart by Roose Bolton, who says, "Jaime Lannister sends his regards".

Walder Frey oversees the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey, and the following feast

Walder Frey oversaw the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey, and the following feast. Edmure Tully was the Lord Paramount of the Trident and the head of House Tully, a Great House of the Riverlands. Roslin was Walder Frey's daughter, and the wedding was a strategic move to secure an alliance between House Frey and House Tully. Walder Frey was the Lord of the Crossing, and head of House Frey, a vassal family of House Tully.

The wedding took place at the Twins, the stronghold of House Frey, which controlled the only crossing over the Green Fork of the River Trident for hundreds of miles. This gave Walder Frey immense strategic power, as he could charge hefty tolls for passage and extort oaths of fealty from those who needed to cross.

Walder Frey was almost ninety years old at the time of the wedding, and had been married seven times previously. He had over a hundred descendants, both trueborn and bastards, and was known for his overwhelming fertility. He ruled over a vast brood of sons, grandsons, and bastards, and his descendants ruthlessly jockeyed for his favour.

The wedding was a lavish affair, with Walder Frey offering his hospitality to Edmure Tully and the other guests. However, he could not resist mocking Robb Stark, who had broken his vow to marry one of Walder Frey's daughters, and insulting Queen Talisa. After the wedding ceremony, Walder Frey oversaw the following feast, during which he gave the signal for his men to massacre the Starks. He watched with glee as his men killed Queen Talisa and Robb Stark's bannermen.

Walder Frey's role in the Red Wedding earned him the contempt and hatred of the North and the Riverlands. He was granted Riverrun and protection from vengeful Northerners by Tywin Lannister. However, his dominion over the Riverlands was weakened when Brynden Tully, Edmure Tully's uncle, reclaimed Riverrun with the remaining Tully armies. Walder Frey's actions had severe consequences for House Frey, and ultimately led to his death at the hands of Arya Stark, who avenged the Red Wedding.

Walder Frey's men massacre the Starks, with Robb killed by Roose Bolton

Walder Frey's men massacre the Starks at the Red Wedding, with Robb Stark killed by Roose Bolton. The betrayal was scheduled to occur after the formal ceremony and the bedding, with Edmure Tully and his bride safely away in another part of the castle consummating their marriage.

Roose Bolton and his men were to position themselves around the hall, secretly armed and armored. Very carefully, they all sat behind Stark bannermen and refrained from consuming any alcohol, so as to keep their wits about them. The signal for the massacre to begin was an instrumental version of "The Rains of Castamere".

As Walder Frey signalled for the massacre to begin, Roose Bolton gave Catelyn Stark a knowing look and glanced towards his left arm. Her eyes followed his gaze and she saw a bit of chainmail peeking out from his sleeve. She then lifted his sleeve, revealing the chainmail he was wearing underneath. Roose smiled ominously and Catelyn realised that they had been led into a trap. She slapped Roose across the face and then shouted to warn Robb, but it was too late.

Robb, wounded with several crossbow bolts, crawled towards his beloved wife Talisa and embraced her, devastated over the loss of his unborn child. Lord Walder, seeing that Robb had survived the initial onslaught, raised a hand to halt the carnage and watched Robb's suffering with cruel amusement.

Roose Bolton then stepped in front of Robb and told him, "The Lannisters send their regards", before stabbing him through the heart. Robb was killed instantly and shared a final, lifeless look with his mother before he died.

Walder Frey is killed by Arya Stark, avenging the Red Wedding

Walder Frey's dominion over the Riverlands is weakened when Brynden Tully reclaims Riverrun from the Freys with what remains of House Tully's armies.

Walder learns of the capture of Riverrun, and the subsequent rising of the other Riverlands Houses against House Frey, from Lame Lothar and Black Walder, which sends him into a fury. He accosts them for allowing Brynden to escape the Red Wedding alive in the first place, and demands they take back Riverrun. To do so, they will use the captive Edmure as a hostage, demanding that his sons show Brynden the knives they used to kill Talisa (along with her unborn child) and Catelyn. Walder rages that he knows the other riverlords still laugh at him, and says that, despite his age, he will not die until they choke on their laughter.

During the feast at the Twins and following the defeat of House Tully, Walder Frey gloats over his "victory". He arrogantly tries to compare himself to Jaime and build some kind of rapport with him; however, a furious Jaime coldly reminds Walder his House is held in contempt by the rest of the Riverlands and needs the Lannisters to enforce their rule. He warns if the Freys continue to prove themselves incompetent at holding their territory, the Lannisters will refuse to bail them out the next time they need help, leaving Walder speechless.

Shortly after the Lannister army leaves, Walder dines on a piece of pie as a serving girl brings him another piece. He is killed by Arya Stark, avenging the Red Wedding.

He correctly deduces the girl is not one of his progeny as she is "too pretty", slaps her rear, and gives her a lascivious look but his mood quickly turns sour over the tardiness of Black Walder and Lothar. The girl replies that they are right there, revealing they are in the very pie that he was eating. Walder goes into a state of shock and looks back at the girl who then reveals her true identity: Arya Stark, wearing a mask she stole from the Hall of Faces. Walder Frey attempts to flee but Arya pulls him back and slits his throat open, the same way her mother, Catelyn, was killed, and watches with satisfaction as Walder bleeds out and dies.
