On February 14, 2016, Elle King secretly married Andrew Ferguson, just three weeks after meeting him at a bar in London. The couple got engaged a week after they met and tied the knot on Valentine's Day.

The "Ex's & Oh's" singer recalled their instantaneous connection: "It was like we had known each other for ten years... We hung out all night, it was my last day in London, and he was like, 'You can't go home.' And I didn't get on my flight, and I stayed in London." Two days later, Ferguson quit his job and moved to America to be with King.

The couple's relationship showed no signs of slowing down, and they decided to have a public wedding ceremony in April 2017 to celebrate with friends and family. However, King never made it down the aisle, choosing instead to watch an Eagles of Death Metal concert from the side stage.

In May 2017, King revealed in an emotional Instagram post that she and Ferguson had separated, writing, "My heart is broken. My soul aches. I am lost." A few days later, Ferguson was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence after allegedly grabbing King by the throat and threatening to kill her. The charges were later dropped.

Despite their separation, the couple reconciled in 2018, with King sharing a snap of them together on Instagram, captioned, "Goodbyes suck... I can't wait to share my new record with the world! Bring on the new year!" However, their second shot at marriage didn't work, and they split up later that year.

Reflecting on her secret marriage, King said, "We were two young, crazy people... We got married three weeks to the day after we met — and you don't know a person after three weeks. I didn't know him, and he didn't know me. It was a crazy time."

The couple's subsequent split

Their planned public wedding on April 15, 2017, did not push through as King chose to go on tour with the Eagles of Death Metal instead. On April 23, 2017, Ferguson was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence after allegedly grabbing King by the throat and threatening to kill her. The charge was later dropped.

On May 15, 2017, a month after their planned wedding date, King revealed on Instagram that she and Ferguson had secretly married in February 2016, three weeks after they met. In the same post, she also announced their split.

"My heart is broken. My soul aches. I am lost. He is the greatest love of my life. He is my best friend," King wrote in the caption of a photo of the two of them. "As we separate, and attempt to find our footing through life, all I can hope for us is that we both find happiness within ourselves. I love you. You'll always have my heart. You'll always be my first husband."

In the year that followed their split, King self-medicated with drugs and alcohol to "numb" the pain of depression and PTSD brought about by the breakup before seeking professional help. She also briefly reunited with Ferguson in January 2018.

Ferguson's arrest and domestic violence charge

On April 23, 2017, a month after their planned wedding date, Andrew Ferguson was arrested and charged with felony domestic violence. He was accused of grabbing his wife, Elle King, by the throat and threatening to kill her.

According to a report by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, police arrested Ferguson for domestic violence a week after the former couple's wedding ceremony date.

King told authorities that her husband, from whom she was separated, grabbed her by the throat and strangled her. She said she felt "dizzy" but did not lose consciousness. Ferguson denied the allegations, saying that King was under the influence at the time and that he was trying to prevent her from harming herself.

The report also stated that King did not want to press charges. The DA's office ultimately declined the case due to King's lack of participation and Ferguson's lack of record and corroboration.

King's battle with substance abuse, depression and PTSD

In 2016, Elle King secretly married Andrew Ferguson, a Scottish man she had met at a bar just three weeks prior. The marriage was kept under wraps for a year, but the relationship began to spiral out of control. King turned to substance abuse to mask her emotions.

King's engagement to tattoo artist Dan Tooker

On October 9, 2020, Elle King announced her engagement to tattoo artist Dan Tooker in an Instagram post. The "Ex's & Oh's" singer revealed that she and Tooker had both proposed to each other while celebrating their one-year anniversary in Angel Fire, New Mexico.

King wrote on Instagram:

> "We rode horses up a mountain to go gold panning. I had a ring in my pocket and I was going to toss it in the gold pan and propose to @tattooker ... but of course, my soulmate beat me to the punch and proposed to me the exact same way. So I immediately got down on my knee too. I love you Daniel. 1 year down, forever to go. I said Yes by the way and so did he! ❤️💍💫❤️."

Tooker also shared the news on his Instagram, writing:

> "We went horse back riding and gold panning for our 1-year anniversary. I found something more precious and beautiful. I proposed after finding the ring in the pan and my sole [sic] mate of course had the same plan. She had a ring too for me. I love you so much and couldn’t imagine eternity with anyone else. I love you forever and more @elleking."

The couple first met in 2019 at Tooker's Boston tattoo shop, and quarantined together during the pandemic, which King said brought them closer together.
