My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 reviews

Reviews for 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' are mixed, with some critics calling it a pointless and tired sequel, while others find it charming and fun.

The film follows the same formula as its predecessor, with a similar structure and narrative theme. It re-enters the lives of Toula (Nia Vardalos) and Ian (John Corbett), who are now facing marital problems and struggling with their rebellious teenage daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), who clashes with Greek traditions. At the same time, Toula's parents, Gus (Michael Constantine) and Maria (Lainie Kazan), discover they were never legally married, leading to plans for an even bigger Greek wedding.

Some critics felt that the film relied too heavily on the same jokes and stereotypes as the first film, with one critic calling it a mild waste of time. Others found it to be a good sequel, praising the cast's chemistry and the film's light-hearted and feel-good nature.

Despite the mixed reviews, the film seems to have resonated with fans of the original, with some calling it a great sequel and a nice follow-up. Ultimately, 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' offers more of the same humour and heart that made the first film a success, and for fans of the franchise, that may be enough.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 plot

The 2016 film My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is the sequel to the 2002 film My Big Fat Greek Wedding. The film was written by Nia Vardalos and directed by Kirk Jones.

The film follows the life of Toula Portokalos-Miller, whose life is in a state of disarray. The recession has forced the closure of her travel agency and the family dry cleaning business. The only remaining business is her father Gus's restaurant, where Toula now works. Her husband Ian is the principal at their teenage daughter Paris's high school. Paris is applying to colleges and feels smothered by her close-knit family, who are constantly interfering in her life. Desperate for independence, she applies to schools across the country.

Toula and Ian's marriage has become strained due to Toula's obsessive need to be involved in Paris's life and fix any problems within the family. Meanwhile, Gus has become convinced that he is a direct descendant of Alexander the Great and wants confirmation from an online ancestry site. While searching through his records, he discovers that his marriage to Maria is not valid because their marriage certificate was never signed by the priest. Although his current priest is unable to sign the certificate, he agrees to perform a new ceremony. Gus insists that he and Maria must marry again after fifty years together, but she wants him to propose properly. When he refuses, Maria is infuriated and refuses to go through with the ceremony.

Eventually, Gus ends up in the hospital, and Maria agrees to marry him. She wants the wedding she never had, so a wedding planner is hired. However, the family's outlandish choices cause the planner to quit, and the whole family pitches in to make the wedding happen. Paris has been accepted to Northwestern University in Chicago and NYU in New York City. She chooses Northwestern to please her mother, but her great-grandmother convinces her to go to New York. Paris asks Bennett, a boy she likes, to the prom, which is on the same night as the wedding. She agrees to attend the reception after the prom.

On the way to the church, Gus and his brother Panos, who has flown in from Greece, get drunk on ouzo. Maria is upset by Gus's behaviour and storms off, but Panos convinces her to go through with the ceremony. Watching Gus and Maria renew their vows, Ian and Toula privately renew theirs. At the prom, Paris and Bennett share their first kiss. At the wedding reception, Gus receives a letter confirming his ancestry, but Ian realises that Toula forged it to make her father happy. The film ends with the family dropping Paris off at her college dorm in New York.
