Jack White's surprise wedding to Olivia Jean
Jack White and Olivia Jean surprised fans by getting married on stage at the Masonic Temple Theatre in Detroit, Michigan, on 8 April 2022. The surprise wedding occurred during an encore after White had proposed to Jean minutes earlier, in the middle of a rendition of "Hotel Yorba".
The rocker wed Jean, a singer on his Third Man label, who had opened his concert earlier that evening. The couple's bass players served as best man and maid of honour. Third Man's top man, Ben Blackwell, presided over the nuptials.
In an interview with The New York Times, Jean said of the surprise proposal and wedding: "It was the best experience of my life. You could plan a wedding for five years and it wouldn't compare to that."
On an episode of The Late Show, White opened up to host Stephen Colbert about what led to his decision to propose to Jean onstage. He also revealed that the nuptials were ultimately Jean's decision: "I asked her, 'Do you get married now, or do you wanna wait?' And she's like, 'No! Right now! This is a great day!'".
White also revealed that Jean was initially taken aback by the proposal: "She was very surprised… Luckily, Ben Swank — who works at Third Man Records — he's also a minister of some church on the internet. I don't know. He was backstage."

White introduced Jean to the crowd as his girlfriend and then asked her if he could ask her a question. When she replied with a curious "Yeah?", White got down on one knee and asked, "Will you marry me?". After Jean said yes, White casually rolled into the next line of the song: "Let's get married!".
The couple returned to the stage for an encore that included a wedding ceremony, officiated by Third Man Records co-founder Ben Swan. White's mother, Theresa Gillis, and Jean's father joined the couple on stage mid-vows.
White later shared a photo of the proposal on his Instagram, with the caption: "Let's get married in a big cathedral by a priest. 04.08.22". Jean shared the same photo on her Instagram, writing, "Life is beautiful. I love you Jack".

Olivia Jean's previous career
Olivia Jean Markel, born on February 23, 1990, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. She was born and raised in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Her parents encouraged their four children to be creative. At the age of seven, Jean received her first guitar as a birthday gift and began teaching herself to play. As a second grader at Elmwood Elementary, she formed her first band, Broken Glass. When she was 13, her mother took her to see her first concert, where she watched the White Stripes perform at Detroit's Masonic Temple.
As a teenager, Jean often skipped school to record instrumental surf music. She also created a fan webpage dedicated to the White Stripes called Olivia's Peppermint Palace. At 14, she formed the Yazuka Drag Queens with her friend Stephany on bass and her younger brother Brent on drums. They played original songs and won their school's talent show, later opening for a local band called Genders. By high school, Jean was a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. She spent her free time recording her own surf music using a computer microphone and layering individual instrument recordings using a free music editing program.
At 16, Jean began performing at small clubs in Detroit and giving out homemade demo CDs to friends, family, and coworkers. In 2009, at 19 years old, she heard that Jack White's supergroup, the Dead Weather, was playing a show in Detroit. She headed to the venue and laid a path of her demos from the band's tour bus to the side door they used to enter. A few weeks later, White called her and invited her to his Nashville studio, Third Man Records, to record her songs. Jean moved to Nashville permanently in 2011. She played bass on two tracks for the 2010 album The Ghost Who Walks, the debut album of White's then-wife, Karen Elson. She also appeared in the music video for the title track and played bass as part of Elson's live band while promoting the album, including a performance on The Late Show with David Letterman in September 2010.
In 2010, Jean co-founded the all-female gothic rock band the Black Belles, serving as the lead singer and guitarist. They released their self-titled debut album in 2011. After the band disbanded in 2012, Jean took a year off before returning to the studio. Using previously recorded music that didn't quite fit the Black Belles, she released her debut solo album, Bathtub Love Killings, in 2014. She wrote all the songs and played almost every instrument herself, with White serving as the producer. Jean has since released two more solo albums: Night Owl and Raving Ghost.

The unexpected wedding was a highlight for fans, with one concertgoer commenting on White's Instagram: "I jokingly said to my husband after the proposal, 'Think we're invited to the wedding?' And indeed we were."
